Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: Govt imposes 36-hour curfew across country, social media platforms blocked

Colombo: Amid protests over the country’s worst economic crisis , Sri Lanka government has imposed a curfew across the country for 36 hours that is from Saturday 6pm to Monday 6 am.

The nationwide curfew was imposed after the protestors broke out President Gotabaya Rajapaksa house. The protestors clashed with the police and military and torched many police and army vehicles.

The Sri Lankan government has also blocked access to all social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube after reports emerged that citizens were planning to launch massive protests over the economic crisis all over the island despite a curfew imposed by the government.

A severe shortage of foreign currency has left Rajapaksa’s government unable to pay for essential imports, including fuel, leading to debilitating power cuts lasting up to 13 hours.
