More than 2,000 senior employees at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are preparing to exit the agency after a sweeping workforce reduction plan tied to tightening budgets.
According to the reports, about 2,145 employees in GS-13 to GS-15 positions are planning to exit, which represent some of the highest ranking non-executive within the federal government.
To encourage voluntary exits NASA has offered early retirement offers, buyouts and options for deferred resignations.
The agency’s total workforce of approximately 18,000 employees has been reportedly facing mounting uncertainty in recent months, with proposed funding cuts threatening to cancel dozens of science and research initiatives.
The situation is further complicated when White House unexpectedly withdrew the nomination of Jared Isaacman, who was set to lead NASA under the Trump administration. The move that blocked Elon Musk’s preferred candidate has fueled speculation of a deepening rift between the SpaceX CEO and the president.
