New Zealand bans assault weapons

Christchurch: New Zealand on Thursday banned the sale of assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons following last week’s Christchurch massacre that killed 50 people in two mosques.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, assault rifles and military-style semi-automatic weapons would be banned with immediate effect, making a pledge to ensure that nothing like the last week’s attack ever occurs in the Pacific nation again.

Ardern added that high-capacity magazines and devices similar to bump stocks, which allow users to fire weapons faster, will also be banned.

“It’s in the national interest and it’s about safety… to prevent an act of terror from ever happening again in our country,” the Prime Minister said about the move.

Ardern said she expects the new law to be in place by April 11 and buy-back schemes will be established for banned weapons.

The Prime Minister also stated that the interim measures will stop a rush of purchases before legislation on the measures takes effect next month.
