Iran: Over 700 Injured In 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake

Tehran: More than 700 people were injured after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Kermanshah province of Western Iran on Monday. The epicentre of the quake was 17 kilometres (11 miles) southwest of the city of Sarpol-e Zahab.

Iran’s State television has said that 716 people have been injured but there were no reports of deaths or any other major damage. However, it showed images of cracked walls inside homes. The initial quakewas followed by several aftershocks including one with a magnitude of 5.2.

As per reports, the shocks of the earthquake were felt as far as Baghdad in neighbouring Iraq.

Notably, Iran in a major earthquake-prone zone and its geography is prone to frequent seismic activity. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake at Bam in South-eastern Iran had killed at least 31,000 people.

Prior to this, a 7.4-magnitude quake in 1990 had killed 40,000 people in northern Iran besides injuring 300,000 and leaving half a million homeless- making it the worst catastrophe in the history of Iran.
