Iran Floods: Damage Estimated At $2 Billion, Death Toll Reaches 76

Tehran: According to official reports, the recent floods in Iran have caused a damage of $2.2 billion, besides killing 76 people. Flood threat still looming in large swaths of the country.

Six more people were confirmed dead in the country’s south, according to a new toll published on Sunday. The southwestern provinces of Khuzestan and Ilam are the latest to be hit by floods that first ravaged the northeast of the country, forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate from cities and villages.

“With the death of five people in the Khuzestan province and another person in Ilam province, the death toll has now reached 76,” a statement by the coroner’s office said.

On Saturday, flood warnings were issued for the eastern provinces of Iran, with heavy rains expected to continue for long.

Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli told parliament that the damages amount to between 300 and 350 trillion Rials – between $2.2 billion and $2.6 billion.

Since mid-March, flash floods have ravaged 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces, forcing mass evacuations, damaging infrastructure, and inflicting heavy losses on the agricultural sector.
