Jakarta: The death toll from the devastating earthquake, that struck Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday, has risen to 347, according to Government-run Antara news agency.

At least 1,400 people are seriously injured. Many villagers are still staying under tents or tarpaulins dotted along roads or in parched rice fields.

Makeshift medical facilities have also been set up to treat the injured. The National Disaster Agency said, tens of thousands of homes, businesses and mosques were levelled by the quake.

Authorities have urgently appealed for medicine, food and clean water for some 1 lakh 56,000 people displaced by the disaster. Local authorities, international relief groups and the central government have begun organising aid.

However, shattered roads have slowed efforts to reach survivors in the mountainous north of Lombok, which bore the brunt of the quake.

The powerful magnitude-6.9 quake left tens of thousands of people homeless and tourists stranded in airports.
