Earthquake of 6.1 magnitudes jolts Taiwan

Taipei: A strong earthquake of 6.1 magnitude on Richter Scale jolted Taiwan’s east coast today early morning.

As per the information given by Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, the tremors were felt at 7.35 am (23.35 GMT) at a depth of 15 kilometers near the city of Haulien.

Fortunately, no damages were reported due to the strong earthquake. It is worth mentioning here that the island nation often experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location between two tectonic plates.

Earlier, in April this year, a deadly earthquake of 7.4 magnitude hit the island nation. As many as 17 people were killed in the natural disaster as it triggered landslides and severely damaged buildings around the epicentre near Hualien.

In a similar instance in Japan, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale struck off Japan’s southern coast on August 8. According to United States Geological Survey, earthquake occurred today at 4:42 pm local time near Miyazaki, Japan. Following this, a tsunami alert was issued in the nation.
