Covid Omicron scare in China ahead of Beijing Winter Olympics

New Delhi: China continued to report rising cases of the highly transmissible Omicron Covid variant on Monday ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Reportedly, a group of infections in the northern city of Tianjin has been detected, which was linked to two Omicron cases reported Monday in the city of Anyang.

The general public have been restricted to leave Tianjin except for emergency use. Those who need to leave must obtain official permission and test negative for the virus within 48 hours of their departure.

The schools and university campuses have been closed, and trains into Beijing from Tianjin have been cancelled. Road checkpoints have been set up for vehicles entering the capital.

More 21 cases were reported in the city Monday, however the strain of virus has not yet been confirmed.
