Brazil’s 200-year-old national museum hit by massive fire

Rio de Janeiro: A massive fire has engulfed the 200-year-old National Museum here in Brazil, probably destroying more than 20 million items in the museum.

So far, there have been no reports of any injuries in the mishap that broke out on Sunday evening.

As many as eighty fire fighters are tackling the blaze at the building though the cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

The museum, which is tied to the Rio de Janeiro federal university and the education ministry, was founded in 1818. It once served as the residence for the Portuguese royal family.
