Bangladesh protests: Several people burnt to death after hotel owned by Awami League leader torched

Dhaka: Atleast 24 were killed and several injured after unidentified miscreants set fire to a residential hotel in Bangladesh’s Jessore district on Tuesday.

The hotel was owned by Shahin Chakladar, general secretary of the Jessore district Awami League.

Deputy Commissioner Abrarul Islam confirmed the news of the arson attack.

As per reports, thousands of people were celebrating the resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at various places in the town. During the celebrations, some people set ablaze the Hotel around 4 pm. Most of the people died from smoke suffocation.

Among the victims, there was an Indonesian citizen, as reported by Prothom Alo. Some bodies were recovered from the liquor bar on the third floor of the hotel.

Two of the deceased were identified as Chayan, 20, and Sejan Hossain, 19.

The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Jessore General Hospital Dr Partho Pratim Chakraborty said that more than 150 patients were admitted to the hospital due to the fire incident.

Additionally, the district Awami League office and the houses of three more Awami League leaders in Sharsha and Benapole areas were also attacked.

Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, miscreants vandalized and set fire to Narail-2 constituency MP Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s residence on Monday.

In addition, they set ablaze the District Awami League office and vandalised District Awami League President Subash Chandra Bose’s houses, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Moreover, miscreants vandalised the Member of Parliament for the Narayanganj-4 constituency, Shamim Osman’s residence in Narayanganj. They also targeted and vandalised the district Awami League office.
