About 11 killed, 122 injured in string of earthquakes in China

New Delhi: At least 11 people were killed and about 122 were injured after two strong earthquakes shook Southwest Sichuan province in China, the state media reported on Tuesday.

The earthquake measured 6.0 on the Ritcher scale and collapsed a hotel in Changning County and damaged some roads, Xinhua news agency said. It also said that rescue operations were underway even though heavy rainfall caused hindrance.

The tremors caused cracks in a major highway connecting Yibin and Xuyong County of Sichuan’s Luzhou city and it has been closed. Some sections of two other highways in China have also been shut post the earthquakes.

Sixty-three fire tenders and about 302 firefighters from Sichuan province have been rushed to the scene for rescue operations, the ministry said.
