92 killed after violent clashes break out in Bangladesh, Nationwide curfew imposed
Dhaka: As many as 92 people were killed, while dozens were injured after thousands of protestors clashed with the ruling party supporters in Bangladesh yesterday.
According to reports, the clashes broke out when protesters attending a non-cooperation program to demand the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation faced opposition from government supporters.
Following the clashes, the nation’s Home Ministry have imposed an indefinite countrywide curfew amid fierce clashes. Additionally, mobile internet has been tightly restricted countrywide.
Similarly, a three-day general holiday has been declared on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to ensure public safety amid the ongoing violent protests across the nation.
Protests have been continuing in the neighboring nation for the past one month. Earlier, , over 200 people were killed in violent clashes between the police and mostly student protesters demanding an end to the controversial quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.
On Saturday, PM Hasina offered an unconditional dialogue with the student leaders, saying, “I want to sit with the agitating students of the movement and listen to them. I want no conflict.” PM Hasina, who is the Awami League President, on Saturday instructed her three party leaders to sit with the coordinators of the protest.
Meanwhile, amid the protests in Bangladesh, the Indian embassy has issued an advisory asking Indian nationals in the country to remain alert as the protests resume.
“All Indian nationals including students living in the jurisdiction of Assistant High Commission of India, Sylhet are requested to be in touch with this office & are advised to remain alert,” the Assistant High Commission of India (AHCI) said in a post on X. A helpline number was also shared for emergencies.
