Lima:  A magnitude 7.1 quake struck nearly 250 km (155 miles) northwest of Puerto Maldonado, Peru, in the early hours of Friday.

The U.S. Geological Survey informed that, the quake’s depth was 609.5 km and occurred at 9:04 am (UTC).

The epicentre of the earthquake was located 250 km northwest of Puerto Maldonado in Peru. However, there were no immediate reports of damage, though social media users said tremors had been felt across the country and as far away as Arica in northern Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any tsunami warning. Chile’s fire service also said on Twitter that the quake did not have the potential to generate one off the Chilean coast.

Peru is situated in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, which is vulnerable to frequent earthquake and volcanic eruptions.
