42 killed as bus catches fire in Zimbabwe

Harare: At least 42 passengers were charred to death on Friday after the bus they were traveling caught fire due to suspected gas tank explosion on the bus. This was confirmed by the Zimbabwe police.

Taking to its Twitter handle, The Herald, a state-owned daily newspaper published in Harare, said, “Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has confirmed that so far, 42 people have been confirmed dead after the accident. Several others are battling with serious burns.”

As many as 27 people were admitted at Gwanda District Hospital from which 5 had sustained burns beyond 90 per cent. They have been referred to Bulawayo.

The incident took place on a highway from the South African border while the bus was crossing to the second city Bulawayo.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa issued a statement commiserating with those who lost loved ones and with those injured. He stressed that such incidents were one too many and needed to be checked.

The Zimbabwe Government has released $15 000 towards funerals of 30 people who died in the incident.

Last week, 47 people were killed when two buses collided on a road between Harare and the eastern town of Rusape.
