400-year-old shipwreck with Indian spices found in sea near Portugal

Cascais, Portugal: In a discovery which they dubbed as “discovery of decade” a group of archaeologists have found a 400-year shipwreck laden with Indian spices near Portugal coast recently.

The shipwreck found off the coast of Cascais near Lisbon was seen surrounded by spices believed to be of Indian origin, nine bronze cannons engraved with the Portuguese coat of arms, Chinese ceramics and cowry shells.

Head of the archaeological team which found the shipwreck, Jorge Freire believe that the ship was carrying spices from the Indian subcontinent and submerged on its way back to Portugal between 1575 and 1625, a period when Portugal’s spice trade with India was at its peak. He claimed that the shipwreck and its loads were “very well-preserved”.

With the discovery of the shipwreck a 10-year-old archaeological project backed by the municipal council of Cascais, the navy, the Portuguese government and Nova University of Lisbon has finally yielded result.
