3 win Nobel medicine award for hepatitis C virus discovery

The week of Nobel Prize Announcement has begun with the Medicine Award. Names of three scientists were announced as the Nobel Prize winner of 2020.

Americans Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice, and British scientist Michael Houghton were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology. The three were awarded Nobel award for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus.

Announcing the prize in Stockholm on Monday, the Nobel Committee reportedly noted that the trio’s work helped explain a major source of blood-borne hepatitis that couldn’t be explained by the hepatitis A and B viruses.

Their work makes possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives, the Nobel committee reportedly said.

This year Nobel Prize for medicine carries much importance since the whole world has come inside the grip of Coronavirus. However, it is unlikely that the winners will have been directly involved in researching the new virus, as the prize usually goes to discoveries made many years or even decades ago.

The Nobel Prize contains a gold medal and prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1,118,000), courtesy of a bequest left 124 years ago by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. The amount was increased recently to adjust for inflation.
