27 dead, Hundreds injured in Nepal rainstorm

Kathmandu: A massive rainstorm hit several places in Nepal on Sunday evening, killing at least 27 and left more than 400 injured, officials confirmed.

The rainstorm swept through the southern district of Bara and adjoining Parsa, The Himalayan Times reported.

According to the District Police Office, Parsa, the number of casualties may rise as more details were awaited.

The storm hit many villages in the Bara district, situated about 128 kilometres south of Kathmandu.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli expressed his sadness over the loss of life and property and said security forces were alerted. Rescue helicopters with night vision capabilities were waiting for the weather to clear to help bring the injured from the villages to medical facilities.

The death and injured count might increase as the rainstorm many villages in the Bara district, located about 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of the capital, Kathmandu.

With fallen trees blocking roads, rescue operation has become a difficult task in Nepal rainstorm.
