New-Delhi: At least 27 people have drowned and 83 were missing after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Guyana.
Till now, sixty-nine people aboard the MV Barima had been rescued alive, Prime Minister Mark Phillips told reporters.
The MV Barima ferry, which had departed from the capital Georgetown for the Essequibo region on Saturday night, capsized mid-route.
The Prime Minister said it has now been confirmed that a total of 179 people were on board the ferry. Earlier passenger lists had shown 133 names, but those were incomplete. “Our main focus now is to find those still missing. We have not given up hope,” he said.
Immediately, the Coast Guard personnel and local fishermen went to the site and started rescue operation. Additionally, the French military has sent 12 divers, two doctors and an engineer from neighbouring French Guiana to assist in the search and rescue efforts.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
