Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: Guide for first-time visitors

India's grandest chariot festival, the Jagannath Rath Yatra, has drawn millions of devotees and tourists to Puri, Odisha.

Celebrated with immense devotion and centuries-old traditions, the annual procession sees Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in elaborately decorated wooden chariots.

However, for first-time visitors, the spiritual spectacle can also be overwhelming due to the massive crowds and elaborate rituals.

Here are a few things that can help you plan your visit and experience the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 safely and meaningfully.

Know the dates and plan in advance The Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri began on July 16, 2026, with the grand chariot procession from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. The deities will remain at the Gundicha Temple for several days before the Bahuda Yatra (return journey) on July 24.

Expect massive crowds and prioritise safety  Lakhs of devotees gather in Puri, making Rath Yatra one of India's largest religious congregations. First-time visitors should arrive early, follow designated entry and exit routes, stay hydrated, keep emergency contacts handy and avoid overcrowded areas.

Understand the rituals before you arrive The festival celebrates Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra travelling in three elaborately decorated chariots to the Gundicha Temple. Having key knowledge of the rituals will help you navigate the event respectfully. Some of the major rituals are Snana Purnima, Anavasara, and Chhera Pahanra, among others.

Dress comfortably Wear light, modest cotton clothing suitable for Odisha's humid weather, along with comfortable footwear for long walks. Also, carry essentials such as drinking water, sunscreen and rain protection, as July is part of the monsoon season.

Travel smart Traffic diversions and vehicle restrictions are common during Rath Yatra, so visitors should rely on official advisories and be prepared to walk considerable distances. Booking accommodation close to the procession route can help ensure a smoother pilgrimage experience.
