HMPV outbreak: Guidelines and precautions to stay safe

HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes damage during the winter season, especially among young and old age groups. Its symptoms resemble those of common cold and flu; hence people should be vigilant about it.

The health department of Telangana has issued guidelines for citizens so they can protect themselves from respiratory infections.

Cover the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing

Frequently wash your hands with soap, water, or using an alcohol-based sanitizer

Observe physical separation from people affected by flu-like symptoms

 Don’t go near others if suffering

Ensure proper airing inside

 Ensure enough hydration; take healthy, nutrient-rich diet

 Do not engage in handshake or close touching of people carrying flu

 Use different tissues. Don’t inhale used ones as handkerchiefs

Avoid spitting somewhere

Do not self-medicate without consulting a doctor

Don’t touch your nose and mouth or mouth often.
