Foods to avoid to ward off cavities

Munching on sugary treats like candies, chocolates, cookies, and carbonated drinks can seem tempting, especially with Christmas and New Year’s just around the corner.

However, all of these can largely contribute to tooth decay and cavities, leaving major damage to your dental health.

Here are a few food items that you can avoid.

Sugary snacks Snacks and candies loaded with sugar directly invite more bacteria in the mouth, producing harmful acids that can attack tooth enamel. Consider substituting sugary treats with fruits or nuts.

Acidic drinks Besides food items, acidic beverages like sodas or soft drinks can erode your tooth enamel over time, making it easier for cavities to form. Try limiting intake of such items and instead go for plain water and non-citric juices.

Sour candies Just like sugar, sour candies can equally harm your teeth as they often contain different kinds of acids that are tougher on the enamel. Plus, if they are chewy, they stick to the teeth for a longer time and cause decay.

Citrus fruits While citrus fruits are a great source of essential vitamins, they are still among the acidic food items. Heavy intake of citric fruits can trigger enamel erosion.

Peanut butter Peanut butter is often counted as a healthy snack option; however, it does get stuck in the teeth, triggering cavities. Monitor the intake of peanut butter and ensure to rinse your mouth properly.
