More than a decade since the first ‘Conjuring’ arrived in theatres, introducing audiences to real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the final chapter is officially on its way.
Directed by Michael Chaves, the film will be released on September 5, promising a chilling end to the familiar evil.
Ahead of the film’s release, you might want to revisit previous films in the franchise in the chronological order. We’ve got you covered.
Set in 1952 Romania, the prequel follows the story of Father Burke and Sister Irene who travel to a convent after a nun’s mysterious death, unaware of the demon Valak’s evil doing in the act. It also introduced to Frenchie aka Maurice, who has a brief, yet impactful appearance in the first Conjuring film.
The film focuses on the creation of the demonic doll Annabelle and its possession. It follows a group of orphaned girls who accidentally unleash an ancient devil, only to be left fighting for their lives. One of them, named Janice, gets possessed by Annabelle and returns as an adult to murder her adoptive parents in 2014’s ‘Annabelle.
Set four years after the first film, the sequel follows the journey of Sister Irene, who is now shown teaching at a boarding school. However, fate takes back to the demon nun aka Valak after a priest is violently murdered.
The first Annabelle spinoff offers a clearer look at the cursed doll, set right before the events of ‘The Conjuring.’ In a deeper backstory, the film shows how Annabelle targeted a couple and their newborn daughter.
The first official entry in the Conjuring franchise, the film begins the Warrens saga. It tells the true story of the Perron family at the haunted Rhode Island farmhouse as they struggle with strange occurrences in their house. While the film’s story dates back to 1863, when the witch Bathsheba killed herself after sacrificing her baby to the devil, the film’s events remain in the 20th century.
The film follows the timeline when the Warrens leave for another investigation, leaving a babysitter to look after their daughter, Judy, with Annabelle also placed in their house. Things take an ugly turn when the evil doll escapes from confinement, wreaking havoc on Judy and the others.
While this film remains largely unrelated to the other Conjuring films, the only connection is that it features Father Perez, who was also present in Annabelle. It follows the Mexican legend of La Llorona, a vengeful spirit who drowns children.
The second Conjuring film brings back the paranormal investigations, focusing on one of the most infamous supernatural cases – the Enfield poltergeist. The film once again brings back demon Valak and its possessions.
The film takes place around 1981, focusing around the real trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who murdered her wife’s boss. It further shows Johnson’s defence that he was possessed.
