You may be shocked to find out that what you eat in the evening can adversely affect your sleep.
Though you may have a snack in the evening before bedtime, there are some foods you should not eat so that your sleep will not be disrupted.
Here is a quick glimpse at 10 foods you should not eat before bed.
Alcohol
Though most individuals have a drink in the evening to unwind, alcohol negatively impacts sleep. Your body rapidly metabolizes alcohol, causing you to wake up when the effects have passed. Research has shown that consuming alcohol prior to bedtime decreases the quality of your sleep and makes it more likely that you will wake up in the middle of the night.
Chocolate
Most individuals like to drink a cup of cocoa in the evening or consume some chocolate bars. Chocolate, however, contains caffeine, which disrupts your body's ability to obtain sufficient deep sleep. Dark chocolate is particularly problematic because it has a higher amount of caffeine than milk chocolate.
Dried Fruit
Dried fruit is packed with fiber and is healthy in moderation. You shouldn't, however, eat it before bed since the high fiber will make you gassy and bloated in bed. Dried fruit is also very high in sugar content, which will get you a sugar high. If you need to have a piece of fruit before going to bed, take fresh fruit instead.
Energy Drinks
It should be clear that consuming an energy drink before going to bed can interfere with your ability to fall and remain asleep. If you have the habit of consuming a lot of energy drinks, you should reduce in general but avoid them particularly at night. It is advisable if you discontinue consuming caffeinated drinks after lunch.
Fatty Foods
Fatty foods are more difficult for your body to digest. If you consume them before going to bed, your digestive system will keep working to break them down and disrupt your sleep. You may also become bloated when consuming fatty foods.
Onions
Onions consumed before bedtime can lead to acid reflux. The gas produced as onions are processed through your body can put pressure within your stomach and push acid into your esophagus. Both grilled and raw onions have this effect and are particularly likely to have this effect when you lie down.
Sugary Foods
Consuming sugary foods near bedtime is also something to be avoided. When you consume high-sugar foods, it makes your blood sugar levels go up before coming crashing down. Changing blood sugar levels can make you have restless sleep.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes should also be avoided near bedtime. Due to their acidity, tomatoes can cause acid reflux if you lay down after eating them. Reserve tomatoes for lunch or dinner earlier in the evening but not an hour or two before bedtime.
Water
Water is vital to health. Although it is critical that you remain well-hydrated throughout the day, do not overconsume water before sleeping. Doing so is more likely to cause you to wake up at night to use the restroom.
