White Paper-2016 reveals marginal surge in overall crimes

Bhubaneswar, Mar 28: The Home department of the state government on Tuesday said that the state witnessed a marginal surge in overall crimes in 2016 than 2015.
The Home department while presenting the White Paper-2016 in the state Assembly said that the state witnessed a marginal surge in overall crimes with registration of 1, 03,602 cases in 2016 as against 1, 03, 200 cases in 2015.
According to the White Paper, 1328 murder cases have been registered in 2016 while 566 dacoity and 2012 loot cases occurred last year.
Similarly, the state witnessed 3197 breach of promise cases and 1914 cases related to violence in 2016.
The White Paper, however, claimed a fall in rape cases in 2016. Rape cases nosedived to 2144 last year from 2184 in 2015.
The White Paper further revealed that as many as 5866 dowry cases, 575 dowry-related murder cases and 79 dowry-related suicide cases were reported in 2016.
