Naveen writes to Harsimrat Badal; bats for NIFTUM in Odisha

Naveen's letterBhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday wrote to Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Badal seeking a National Institute of Food Processing, Entrepreneurships and Management (NIFTUM) in Odihsa.

In his letter to Badal, the Chief Minister said that with 10 agro-climatic zones, Odisha has a huge potential for the food processing sector. The state is not only surplus in production of rice, but also has substantial output of maize, horticulture producse, spices like ginger and turmeric and sea food items.

Patnaik also pointed out that a Food Park at Khordha is already operational with popular food processing units like Britannia, Indo-Nissin, ITC Ltd., Parle Agro, and Coca Cola India etc. Besides, the MITS Mega Food Park at Rayagada is ready to commence its operations and the Sea Food Park at Deras near Bhubaneswar is at an advanced stage of execution.

Moreover, Eastern Nutriments Ltd. is also in the process of development of another Food Park at Ramdaspur in Cuttack.

“In view of the fast growing agro-food processing sector, there is an imminent need for setting up of a National Institute of Food Processing (NIFP) in the state. I would, therefore, request you to consider sanctioning of a National Institute of Food and Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTUM) in Odisha,” wrote Naveen in his letter to the Union Minister.
