Curfew extended in Bhadrak

Bhadrak, Apr 08: Police on Saturday extended Curfew that was imposed in the town on Friday following communal violence over a Facebook post hurting the sentiments of one community.

According to reports, the district administration extended the Curfew and the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC today till 6 pm at different places of the town in view of the lingering communal tension.

Besides, efforts are on to take control of the fire that broke out after some miscreants set at least 50 shops on fire yesterday night.

Police have detained over 28 persons so far and are not allowing anybody to enter into the town without any identity proof. However, students appearing different exams have been permitted to go to their exam centres.

Around 18 platoons of police forces have been deployed to restore peace in the town.

Revenue Divisional Commissioner (Central) A.B. Ota, Home secretary Asit Tripathy and DGP KB Singh are closely monitoring the situation.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Leaders of Opposition Narasingha Mishra and others appealed for calm and peace in the violence torn town.

“I sincerely appeal to all in Bhadrak for peace & harmony; have directed stringent action against any attempt to disrupt peace,” the Chief Minister said in a Twitter message.

The state government on Friday appointed Commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) Gyana Ranjan Das as the new district Collector of Bhadrak.

Communal violence erupted on Thursday following the objectionable remarks on Lord Ram and Goddess Sita on Facebook.

A Peace Committee meeting was organised yesterday to resolve the matter, but it failed. Later, a fresh violence erupted, following which shoot-at-sight orders were issued.
