Tinder rolls out transgender, 22 other gender options for users in India

California: Tinder rolled out ‘More Genders’ for users outside the gender binary in India on Tuesday. The new feature adds 23 new gender options including that of transgender on the dating app.

Earlier, only two gender options – man and woman – were available on Tinder. However, now the Tinder users will be able to edit their profiles in order to choose a different option for their gender identity as well as toggle a setting that will display their gender on their profile in the app.

Tinder rolled out features in line with Transgender Awareness Week, which started on November 12 and will continue till November 19, after collaborating with transgender users and ‘The Humasafar Trust’, India’s oldest LGBTQ organisation.

Users of the dating app in U.S got these same options after it added options for transgender and gender non-conforming people in November, 2016.

Apart from rolling out ‘More Genders’ in India, Tinder is also allowing users, who may have been reported by others due to gender issues, to return. In order to return to Tinder, they need to send an email of their Tinder account details to questions@gotinder.com, following which their profiles will be reviewed.

Notably, the matching app, has been making its platform more India-centric. It had rolled out a feature called “My Move” only for the Indian women. The “My Move” gives women more control over their profile and allows them to send the first message to their matches. Earlier, if two people matched on Tinder either one could send a message.
