New Delhi: Instagram recently revealed that it is testing new features that would make it easier for people to recover their accounts overtaken by hackers.
In 2018, it was reported that hackers were targeting Influencers on Instagram by gaining access to their accounts and holding them ransom in exchange for bitcoins.
Prior to the attacks on Instagram Influencers, hackers gained access to 6 million Instagram accounts and their credentials in 2017. Thus, the company needs to take some stringent measures to help those affected by these malicious hacks in recovering their accounts.
In order to address the issue, Instagram is now reportedly changing the way hacked accounts can be recovered by their original users.
Nevertheless, there are simple steps following which one may get back his/her Instagram account overtaken by hackers.
- Open the Instagram App and go to the login page
- Once there, you will be asked to enter the email address and phone number used to sign-up on the account.
- Instagram will then send a 6-digit security code to that email address and phone number.
- Enter the code provided and regain access to your account.
Moreover, if a hacker has control over the user’s email and phone number, too, an Instagram spokesperson said, “When you re-gain access to your account, we will take additional measures to ensure a hacker cannot use codes sent to your email address [or] phone number to access your account from a different device.”
The same process will also protect people whose usernames were changed. In that same vein, Instagram says another feature that’s already available on Android will “ensure your username is safe for a period of time after any account changes, meaning it can’t be claimed by someone else if you lose access to your account.”
