New Technology To Make Heart Monitoring Easier

Newly developed device is capable to make heart rate monitoring easier and more accurate than the traditional procedures.

Washington DC:  A recent technological invention has developed a stretchable lightweight material which can be used to monitor heart rates. It is capable of making the process of monitoring the heart beat easier and is more accurate in comparison to the existing electrocardiograph procedure, reported ANI.

Developed by engineers, the latest incarnation of Lu’s Electronic Tattoo Technology, a graphene-based wearable device that can be placed on the skin to measure a variety of body responses from electrical to biomechanical signals, reported the Journal of Advanced Science.

The device is so lightweight and stretchable can be placed over the heart for extended periods with a little or no discomfort at all.  The device is developed in such a way that it can measure Cardiac health in two ways. It takes Electrocardiograph and Seismocardiography readings simultaneously.

Electrocardiograph (ECG) is a method that records the rates of electrical activity produced each time the heart beats. Seismocardiography (SCG) is a measurement technique which uses chest vibrations associated with heartbeats.

The device is like an E-tattoo. It is operated by a Smartphone as the remote. This e-tattoo is the first ultra-thin and stretchable device to measure both ECG and SCG. ECG readings alone are not accurate enough to determine the health of the heart. But with this technology, it gives more additional information when combined with SCG.

“We can get a much greater insight into heart health by the synchronous collection of data from both sources,” said Lu, one of the researchers of the study.

Lu and her team’s E-tattoo is made of a piezoelectric polymer called polyvinylidene fluoride, capable of generating its own electric charge in response to mechanical stress. The device also includes 3D digital image correlation technology that is used to map chest vibrations in order to identify the best location on the chest to place the e-tattoo.

The traditional method of ECG measuring can be done at a doctor’s clinic where the heart rates can be measured for a couple of minutes at a time. But the e-tattoo can be worn for days and that enables constant monitoring of heart rates.
