Do you know you can do voice and video call from your desktop to your friends in any corner of the world for free of cost using WhatsApp. It is possible due to a recently launched feature of the popular instant-messaging app that allows users to make or receive voice and video calls on its desktop app for Windows and Mac.

Earlier, the said feature was being rolled out for select users only, but now it is available for everyone in India. If you use the desktop or laptop everyday for work or personal use then this will help you.

However, note that you still cannot make any group voice or video call from the Whatsapp desktop app.

How to Download WhatsApp Desktop Apps

You can download the WhatsApp app for your laptop or desktop or Mac from the company’s official website. You can download the app for Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit as per your requirement and Mac as well.

WhatsApp’s desktop apps Supported versions

WhatsApp says the new calling feature is supported on Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 or newer and macOS 10.13 or newer. But this feature only supports one-to-one WhatsApp calls as of now. You cannot make group calls on WhatsApp’s desktop app yet.

Things required for making WhatsApp video calls on PC

If you want to make WhatsApp voice and video calls on the desktop, you will need these three things:

  1. If you want to make an audio call then you will need an audio output device and microphone.
  2. But if you need to make WhatsApp video calls, then will need a webcam along with the audio output device and microphone.
  3. Your computer and phone needs to have an active internet connection.
  4. Grant permission to WhatsApp to access your computer’s microphone and camera to make the calls.

How to make WhatsApp calls on a desktop

Here’s how you can make WhatsApp calls on the desktop.

  1. Install WhatsApp’s desktop app for Windows or Mac from the official site.
  2. Scan the QR code on your computer using your phone to log in.
  3. Open WhatsApp account on the Desktop.
  4. Go to chat window an open a chat.
  5. Click on the voice call icon or the video call icon at the top right corner.
  6. Then if the contact is online your phone will be connected and you can talk with them directly from the desktop.
