Most of the social media users are not giving a second thought before feeding OpenAI’s latest AI chatbot their personal pictures for converting it into Studio Ghibli style animation. Well, even though the trend seems to be entertaining / interesting it is far away from being safe.
According to multiple data privacy experts this trend is quite concerning and this might lead to privacy concerns.
“Think this is a fun trend? Think again. While some don’t have an issue sharing selfies on social media, the trend of creating a “Ghibli-style” image has seen many people feeding OpenAI photos of themselves and their families,” mentioned an X post by Proton, a platform focused on data security.
Proton used a series of tweets in order to explain the seriousness of the situation.
After a user shares their personal photos with AI, they lose control over its use. The photos are used to train AI and can be used to generate content that are defaming or harassing in nature. Similarly, the AI models which are used for image generation rely on large training datasets. There are chances that your photos might be used without your consent. The personal data that is shared with the AI can be used for personalised ads and/or sold to third parties, mentioned Proton.
Similarly, AI activist and author Elle Farrell-Kingsley also tweeted about the potential concern about Ghibli AI image trend.
“Privacy: Uploading pics/thoughts to AI tools risks exposing metadata, location, even sensitive data—especially for kids. If it’s free, you (& your data) are the price. If you’re fine with that, great but it’s good to be aware,” mentioned the activist.
