Eng vs Pak 1st Test

Manchester: Former captain Alec Stewart feels England could not make the most of the overcast conditions and let Pakistan off the hook on the opening day of the first Test at the Old Trafford.

England bowlers started brightly on the rain-marred opening day, removing Abid Ali and Azhar Ali inside the team score of 50. But from there on, they were guilty of giving away easy boundaries as Babar Azam and Shan Masood capitalised on it.

The duo put on an unbeatable 96-run stand to help the visitors end the day at 139/2. Babar remained unbeaten on 69 while Masood remained not out at 46 on Wednesday.

“England set such high standards and have just beaten the West Indies. They know they are up against an even better side in Pakistan,” Stewart told Sky Sports’ ‘The Cricket Debate’.

“They were good in the first session but it was like a different side came out after Lunch. England know they let Pakistan off the hook with those overcast conditions.”

Former England pacer Dominic Cork agreed that England were poor with their bowling but was impressed by the way Masood and Babar batted.

“Pakistan played and missed in the first session and could have been two or three down but that’s cricket – you are not always going to get the edges,” said Cork.

“Pakistan left the ball really well and that made Stuart Broad and James Anderson bowl tighter to the stumps and when you do that Masood and Babar will whip you through the leg-side.

“England were striving for wickets and got greedy and didn’t stick to their plans. I think they will hold their hands up and say it wasn’t the best they ever bowled.

“Ultimately it will be about what they do on the morning (of Day Two) – if they allow Pakistan to build a big first innings Pakistan become favourites, especially with two leg-spinners,” he added.

Ban on PUBG in pakistan to continue

Islamabad: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has said that the ban on PlayerUnknown’s Battle Ground (PUBG) will remain in the country in interest of public order, it was reported on Tuesday.

Last week, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had declared PTA’s move to temporarily suspend the online game void and directed the authority to immediately lift the ban, Dawn news reported.

However, the PTA said PUBG would remain blocked in Pakistan.

In a statement issued on Monday, the PTA said it had issued a detailed order explaining the reasons why it had blocked the online game in accordance with the provisions of the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016.

“The PTA provided an opportunity of hearing to concerned parties including PUBG’s lawyers. PTA has also approached PUBG management to inform about a suitable framework to address key concerns,” it added.

The PTA said it had come across various studies, papers and reports regarding the impact of internet games, specifically PUBG, on the mental as well as physical health of the players, reports Dawn news.

Besides violence and addiction, the authority said PUBG made people less productive.

The academic performance of students was affected as gaming sessions tend to last longer, and a child, who is addicted to gaming, tends to get irritated at the smallest of things or if parents interfere in something, it added.

Islamabad: There was a lot of opposition to the construction of a Hindu temple in Islamabad, Pakistan. Many organizations and leaders called it anti-Islam and even warned of the terrible consequences. Now a group of Muslim organizations have supported the construction of the temple. The organization has also condemned the controversy over the issue. The organization says that everyone’s officers are given in the Constitution clearly.

The Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) has said that the constitution of Pakistan clearly defines the rights of Muslims and non-Muslims living in the country, according to a report in Pakistan newspaper ‘Dawn’. Many Islamic religious leaders and legalists of various Islamic traditions are members of this group.

PUC President Hafiz Mohammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi said on Friday, ‘We condemn the controversy over the construction of the temple. It is not right to do so (making it a controversy) by orthodox religious leaders. The PUC will convene a meeting and also present its stand before the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII).

CII is a constitutional body whose job is to provide legal advice to the Government of Pakistan on Islamic issues. Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs has written to CII seeking its opinion on the government’s grant for the construction of a temple in the capital amid protests from some Muslim groups.

Religious Affairs Minister Nurul Haq Qadri said on Wednesday that there is no problem with the construction of the temple, but the real issue is whether it can be built with public money. The government has approved a grant of Rs 10 crore for the construction of the Krishna temple. It is to be constructed on a 20,000-square-foot plot in the H-9 administrative section of the capital.

Terrorism in Jammu

Jammu & Kashmir: Many leaders in Jammu and Kashmir are on the target of terrorists. Terrorists have hatched a conspiracy for widespread violence in the Valley before August 5, said sources.

The sources further said that this conspiracy has been hatched from across the border on completion of one year of Article 370 removal. Under this, instructions have been given to target leaders, panchayat nominees and security forces personnel. However, the security forces have been instructed to take special vigilance after receiving such information.

Sources associated with security agencies said that before August 5, many incidents can be carried out by terrorist organizations on the instigation of Pakistan in Kashmir. In this, attacks can be done especially on the leaders and panchayat representatives. Policemen can be abducted and threatened to leave their jobs.

Major terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir may take place before August 5!

With this, Kashmiri Pandits and other outsiders can be threatened. Incidents of security establishments and security forces may increase.

Sources said that Pakistan will do all this so that it can tell the world that despite the removal of Article 370, not much has changed in Jammu and Kashmir. Even before this, it has lodged a protest against the removal of 370 in many international forums.

The most sensitive is southern and northern Kashmir. After the assassination of Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch Ajay Pandita in Anantnag, not only the Kashmiri Pandits but the common panchayat representatives are also in awe. They are constantly demanding their protection.

Speaking about the possible terrorist attack, DGP Dilbag Singh said that the security forces are capable to deal with every situation. The atmosphere in the valley will not be allowed to deteriorate in any way. The terrorists are constantly being screwed. So far this year more than 120 terrorists have been killed. Those who remain will also be killed. As such, the security forces remain in alert mode at all times, but special vigilance will be taken on the Amarnath Yatra and August 5.

Kashmir’s IG Vijay Kumar says that if any public representative poses any threat or has received any threat, such people will be provided security. Protecting everyone is the priority of the police. Such people should meet and share information with the police.

Jammu: One woman was killed and two others were injured on Wednesday in ceasefire violation by Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Pakistan used small arms and mortars to violate the ceasefire in Mendhar of Poonch district.

Colonel Devender Anand, Defence Ministry spokesman said, “Today at about 2 a.m. Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and intense shelling with mortars along the LoC in Balakote and Mendhar sectors in Poonch district.

“Indian army retaliated befittingly”.

Since January this year, Pakistan has violated ceasefire on the LoC and the international border in J&K over 2,400 times.

Frequent shelling of military and civilian facilities by Pakistan along the LoC has thrown lives of hundreds of residents of border villages out of gear.

The lives, livelihood, cattle, homes and agricultural fields of the poor border residents have always suffered because of cross border hostilities along the LoC.

Lahore: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said that he has always enjoyed playing against India and that he still stands by what he said in 2016 about receiving more love in India than he did back in Pakistan.

“I have always enjoyed India. We’ve beaten them pretty comprehensively quite a few times. I believe we’ve beaten them so much that they used to ask us for forgiveness after the match,” he said on the Cric Cast show on YouTube.

Afridi was captain of the Pakistan side that came to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup. He had said then that the team had got more love then than they probably ever did even in Pakistan.

His recent comments on Kashmir and his war of words with former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has led to a significant souring of relationship between him and Indian fans but Afridi said that he stands by what he said then.

“I stand by what I said in 2016, that I have got more love in India than from any other country. Back then I had gone there as a captain and hence as an ambassador of Pakistan,” he said.

“I enjoyed a lot playing against India and Australia, you have more pressure. They are good teams, big teams. Going and performing in their conditions is the big thing.”

Afridi also said that his 141 that he scored in the 1999 Chennai Test was his favourite knock. “My most memorable innings was the 141 against India, that too in India. I was not going on that trip; they were not taking me. Wasim bhai (Akram) and the chief selector that time supported me a lot. It was a very difficult tour and that inning was very important,” Afridi said.

Islamabad: At a time when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Ladakh, amid the ongoing standoff between Indian and Chinese forces, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has reaffirmed Islamabad’s extended support to China’s “One China Policy”, along with a complete alliance against India.

Qureshi held a brief telephonic conversation with Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday, immediately after Modi concluded his visit to Ladakh.

As per an official press release, “bilateral, regional, and international issues were discussed” with Islamabad underscoring that the two countries are “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partners”, who are facing “common challenges”.

Beijing’s ‘One China Policy’ has its core interests in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang, while the multi-billion dollar Silk Route, part of which is the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), making Pakistan’s support and the regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Ladakh sensitively important.

Pakistan’s open support to Beijing is certainly in line with the concerns New Delhi and Washington have raised over the increasing presence of China in the region along the CPEC belt, stretched from Gwadar Port to Gilgit-Baltistan.

Islamabad has been open in siding with China when it comes to countering the threat it faces from mutual rival India, a point Qureshi re-asserted during his telephonic conversation with his Chinese counterpart.

“Foreign Minister Qureshi underscored that regional security situation was deteriorating and underlined that India’s belligerent posture and expansionist policies were imperilling peace in the region,” read a press release from Pakistan Foreign Office.

“Apart from committing egregious violations of human rights in IOJ&K, India was seeking to change the demographic structure of the occupied territory. The Foreign Minister also briefed about the repeated violations committed by India across the LOC as well as targeted killing of the civilians. In the face of Indian provocations, Pakistan was exercising restraint,” Qureshi maintained.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Prime Minister was on a visit to Ladakh, his first visit after the India-China standoff.

Modi did not mention China in his speech to the troops, but his gestures and words were loud and clear, cautioning Beijing over its desire of “expansionism”.

“Age of expansionism is over, this is the age of development. History is witness that expansionist forces have either lost or were forced to turn back,” Modi said in his address to troops in Ladakh.

While Modi’s message to China is a cautious intimation, Pakistan is keeping a very close eye on the developments in the region. China’s presence in Ladakh will need Islamabad’s support to sustain and Islamabad is extending every support to ensure New Delhi remains challenged.

Islamabad: The number of COVID-19 cases have increased to 201,414, while the death toll stood at 4,098, it was reported on Sunday.

The new tallies were reached after the country reported 3,709 cases and 94 deaths over the past 24 hours, reports Dawn news.

An National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) meeting on Saturday compared the tally of tests conducted on June 21 and 26 and found that the number of new cases across the country dropped by around 40 per cent from 7,000 to 4,000 a day.

They discussed different factors such as testing, smart lockdown and awareness campaigns regarding precautionary measures that could have contributed to drop in the number of new cases.

It was observed that the number of tests declined by 64 per cent in Sindh, the worst affected in the country where 78,267 cases have been registered so far.

The second most affected is Punjab province with a total of 72,880 cases, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (25,380), Islamabad (12,206), Balochistan (10,261), Gilgit-Baltistan (1,417) and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (1,003).

The participants of the meeting also noted that the number of patients having COVID-19 symptoms was on a decline, while people’s movement across Pakistan had been reduced due to the 542 lockdowns enforced in 20 cities.

Relief for Pakistan as FATF extends deadline

Islamabad: In a much needed breather for Pakistan, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has extended the deadline for the country till the next plenary meeting, urging Islamabad to ensure compliance of 27-point action plan.

The extension in deadline of review of Pakistan’s progress to counter money-laundering and terror financing because of the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, made it almost impossible for assessed jurisdiction and assessors alike to conduct on-site visits and in-person meetings.

“The gravity of the COVID-19 situation globally and the consequent COVID-19 related measures that countries have adopted, such as confinement and travel restrictions, are making it impossible to assessors to conduct on-site and in-person processes. The FATF acknowledges these severe challenges that countries face at this difficult time”, an FATF statement said.

“The FATF Plenary has therefore agreed to temporarily postpone all remaining FATF mutual evaluations and follow-up deadlines.”

The next plenary meeting will be held after four months in October.

The COVID-19 pandemic has come to rescue Pakistan this time as the Imran Khan led government is still falling short on compliance of the action plan, handed by the FATF to comply and curb the menace of terror financing and money-laundering.

The Pakistan government is yet to pass amendments into its Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Foreign Exchange Regulation laws from Parliament for complying with the FATF conditions.

Pakistan is also yet to incorporate amendments related to Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), which would ensure recorded and presentable steps taken to satisfy FATF on its progress.

As per government sources, “work is being done to being the required changes into different laws and the pending legislation bills vigorously”.

The FATF had placed Pakistan on the grey list in June 2018, placing at least 27 conditions for compliance review on September 2019.

Since then, Pakistan has been given extensions at least thrice of three months each as Islamabad failed to comply with the conditions, required to ensure its name is removed from the grey list.

As per latest updates on Pakistan’s compliance, only 14 points out of the 27 point action plan have been fully complied while remaining 13 points are still pending that need compliance done within the latest extension of three months.

The list of remaining 13 points still to be complied includes:

*Pakistan will have to demonstrate effectiveness of sanctions including remedial actions to curb terrorist financing in the country.

*Pakistan will have to ensure improved effectiveness for terror financing of financial institutions with particular to banned outfits.

*Pakistan will have to take actions against illegal money or value transfer services (MVTS).

*Pakistan will have to place sanction regime against cash couriers.

*Pakistan will have to ensure logical conclusion from ongoing terror financing investigation of law enforcing agencies (LEAs) against banned outfits and proscribed persons.

*Pakistani authorities will have to ensure international cooperation based investigations and convictions against banned organizations (list provided to Pakistan) and proscribed persons (list provided to Pakistan).

*The country will have to place effective domestic cooperation between Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU) and LEAs in investigation of terror financing.

*Prosecution of banned outfits and proscribed persons (list provided to Pakistan).

*Demonstrate convictions from court of law of banned outfits and proscribed persons (list provided to Pakistan).

*Seizure of properties of banned outfits and proscribed persons (list provided to Pakistan)

*Conversion of madrassas to schools and health units into official formations (list provided to Pakistan).

*To cut off funding of banned outfits and proscribed persons

*Pakistan will have to place permanent mechanism for management of properties and assets owned by the banned outfits and proscribed persons (list provided to Pakistan).
