Mumbai: Given the current financial crisis, India needs an economic expert like former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar said here on Sunday.

Pawar recalled how he was a Union minister when Singh was the Finance Minister and the country was passing through a financial crisis in the early 1990s.

“However, it was Manmohan Singh who gave the country a new direction and pulled the country out of the economic problems. For this I give full credit to Manmohan Singh, and also (then Prime Minister) P.V. Narasimha Rao. Today, the country needs him (Singh). I feel Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saheb should take the initiative to seek help of economists. I am confident the country will support him,” said Pawar.

The NCP chief urged Modi to confabulate with knowledgeable people from different parties, take the help of whosoever possible or feasible, take everybody along, as in the Prime Minister’s current set-up, “there are some persons who have no such experience.”

Pawar’s comments came in the second instalment of his marathon interview with ‘Saamana’ and ‘Dopahar Ka Saamna’ Group Executive Editor and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

Asked whether he had discussed the current scenario with the current Finance Minister (Nirmala Sitharaman), Pawar, 79, replied in the negative.

“No. I never met her even once, nor had any discussions with her. At times of financial crisis confronting such a big country with a huge population there are many challenges, and a dialogue with others (parties) is necessary, but that’s not happening now,” the NCP supremo said.

In this context he pointed out he had observed persons like Pranab Mukherji, P. Chidambaram and Manmohan Singh spending hours with experts and leaders of other political parties, seeking their suggestions as India is a huge country with diverse viewpoints.

“I don’t know if something similar is happening now. If its being done, there has to be some outcome of that, which is not visible,” Pawar said, implying that a political dialogue at the national level seems to be missing.

Dwelling on questions pertaining to security vis-a-vis India’s neighbours, Pawar said that “when we think of the enemy, the first name that crops up is Pakistan.”

“But we should not worry about Pakistan. In the long-term, it is China that is detrimental to India’s interests, it is 10 times more powerful than us militarily, it has systematically created all this after years of planning, vision and programmes besides economic strength to act against us. China is the real worry and poses a bigger threat to India,” Pawar asserted.

Recounting his meeting as Defence Minister with the Chinese Premier at a private sea resort in that country, Pawar said at the time (over 25 years ago), China was only concerned about giving a challenge to the USA and Japan.

“When I asked him what China’s policy vis-a-vis its neighbours, he said they were not thinking of them, maybe after around 25 years. Today, that danger has arisen, China is economically strong. Now, its target is India. Modi became friends with President Xi Jinping, hugged and shook hands, sat on a swing, gave gifts. An impression was conveyed that we have achieved something big with this camaraderie. But problems between two countries cannot be solved in such a manner, now we realise that,” Pawar pointed out.

On the tendency of the BJP government to blame Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi for all problems related to China and Pakistan, Pawar said we must also consider the situation whereby all our neighbours like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are now siding with China. “These sullied relations are the contribution of the present times”.

He felt that instead of hitting back, the Centre should exert global pressure on China through diplomatic channels and negotiations and resolve pending issues like the Galwan valley clash.

Pawar also touched upon various other issues pertaining to the lockdown and how Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s government has fared well in the first half and is working hard.

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying “disinformation” on the Chinese transgression will be a “betrayal” to the sacrifice made by the Indian soldiers at the LAC and it was neither a “substitute for diplomacy” nor “decisive leadership”.

Manmohan Singh was criticising Modi’s statement at the all-party meeting on Friday and later clarification by the Prime Minister’s Office on the June 15 night’s violent face-off between the Indian and Chinese sides at Galwan Valley on the Line of Actual Control that led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers, including a commanding officer.

The PM statement was used by the Chinese to get away from their misdeeds at the Galwan Valley.

“The Prime Minister cannot allow them to use his words as a vindication of their position and must ensure that all organs of the Government work together to tackle this crisis and prevent it from escalating further,” said the former Prime Minister.

Manmohan Singh in a statement said: “We remind the Government that disinformation is no substitute for diplomacy or decisive leadership.”

“The truth cannot be suppressed by having pliant allies spout comforting but false statements,” added Manmohan Singh.

Singh said Prime Minister should be “mindful” of the implications of his words.

He said in Indian democracy that responsibility rests with the office of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister must always be mindful of the implications of his words and declarations on our Nation’s security as also strategic and territorial interests.

The former Prime Minister said China is brazenly and illegally seeking to claim parts of Indian territory such as the Galwan Valley and the Pangong Tso by committing multiple incursions between April 2020 till date.

“The Nation, lost twenty brave soldiers in the Galwan Valley, Ladakh on June 15th-16th, 2020. They laid down their lives in the ultimate act of sacrifice, valour and duty to our country. Our bravehearts defended the motherland till their last breath and for that we owe them, and their families, our eternal gratitude,” said the statement

“However, their sacrifice cannot be allowed to be in vain. At this moment, we stand at historic crossroads. Our Government’s decisions and actions will have serious bearings on how the future generations perceive us. Those who lead us bear the weight of a solemn duty.

“We cannot and will not be cowed down by threats and intimidation nor permit a compromise with our territorial integrity,” said Manmohan Singh.

“This is a moment where we must stand together as a nation and be united in our response to this brazen threat and the Prime Minister and the Government have to rise to the occasion, to ensure justice for Col. B. Santosh Babu and our jawans who have made the ultimate sacrifice and resolutely defended our territorial integrity.”

“To do any less would be a historic betrayal of the people’s faith,” said the statement from Manmohan Singh.

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday reiterated that it stood with the nation to take on the coronavirus threat amid a 21-day nationwide lockdown.

During the Congress Working Committee meeting held through videoconferencing in the morning to discussed various issues, including government response to the pandemic, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reiterated the party’s support to the government, earlier also voiced by the party leader Rahul Gandhi.

In her opening remarks, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said: “We meet today in the midst of an unprecedented health and humanitarian crisis. The magnitude of the challenge before us is daunting but our resolve to overcome it must be greater.”

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who was among the Congress CMs to attend the meeting, informed the CWC about the preparations and steps taken to fight COVID in his state, including provision of food and medication and preventive steps.

Praising the efforts of various organizations and Punjab Police during the lockdown, he pointed out to non-release of Punjab’s share of Rs 5,000 crore by the Centre as a hindrance in the fight against coronavirus.

He said he had taken up the issue with the Union Finance Minister.

New Delhi: Congress interim Chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former party President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday exercised their franchise at different polling stations in the national capital.

Sonia Gandhi, who was discharged from the hospital after four days following stomach infection, arrived at a polling booth in central Delhi’s Nirman Bhawan and exercised her franchise. This is the first time that Sonia Gandhi arrived to cast her vote without former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Diskhit, who passed away last year in July.

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the daughter of Sonia Gandhi, arrived at the polling booth in Nirman Bhawan to receive her mother. Priyanka Gandhi will exercise her franchise later in the day at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya polling booth at Lodhi Estate in central Delhi.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also exercised his franchise at the Nirman Bhawan polling station.

Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP from Kerala’s Wayand, also cast his vote at the NP Senior Secondary School in Aurangzeb Lane here.

The Congress which ruled the city for 15 years from 1998 to 2013 is looking for a comeback in this election. The party was reduced to nil in 70 member assembly in 2015 polls, while the AAP had won 67 seats. The rest three seats were won by the BJP. Counting of votes will take place on February 11.

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) The Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval for the National Population Register (NPR) with no requirement by the people to submit any document to prove their identity.

Announcing the decision taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said no proof will be sought from people during the process of NPR beginning April 2020.

“There is no need of any proof, document and biometric as we believe on people. Whatever you will say would be correct. All states have accepted and notified it. The states have also started their campaign,” Javadekar said while addressing a press briefing.

“NPR will be on self declaration basis and only head count will be done.”

It will be conducted by the Office of the Registrar General of India (RGI) under the Union Home Ministry and will be done before the 2021 census.

As per the proposal, the exercise to update the NPR would be held in all states and Union Territories between April and September 2020.

The NPR was started in 2010 by the UPA government led by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ahead of Census 2011.

The NPR is a register of residents of the country.

It is being prepared at the local (village/sub-town), sub-district, district, state and national level under the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

New Delhi: Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday attacked the BJP government over the economic slowdown and accused it of indulging in vendetta politics as she told party leaders that it was not enough to be aggressive only on social media as “democracy was in peril” and the mandate was being “misused” by the government.

According to a Congress source, “Sonia told the party leaders that democracy is in peril today. The electoral mandate is being misused and abused in a most dangerous fashion by the government. Appropriation of freedom fighters and leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and B.R. Ambedkar with the sole aim of misinterpreting their true messages to further their nefarious agenda. The Congress party must have agitational agenda, and merely being active on social media is not enough.”

Sonia said this while addressing the meeting of party general secretaries, state in-charges, state unit chiefs and others here.

A party source said that she also recalled the UPA regime’s achievements in dealing with the economic slowdown between 2007 and 2009.

“She told party leaders that our government had taken the economy out of the slowdown during the economic recession,” the source said.

She also recalled how during the UPA regime the Congress-led government was able to generate jobs.

Slamming the government over the economic slowdown, Sonia told the party that the BJP-led NDA government has been unable to save jobs in several sectors.

Sonia said that “the resilience and resolve of the Congress is being tested today. And we need to go to people.”

This is the first meeting of Sonia with senior party leaders, a month after she was appointed the party’s interim chief.

Her son and former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi stepped down from the top post taking moral responsibility for the party’s loss in the Lok Sabha polls.

The party source also said that the agenda of the meeting will revolve around Gandhi Jayanti preparations, membership drive and party workers’ training.

New Delhi : Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday attacked the government for its flawed policies that have caused the current economic slowdown and asked Congress party leaders to hit the streets to inform people about the policies of the earlier UPA government at the Centre during the global economic recession, party sources said.

The former Prime Minister’s views were supported by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was also present in the meeting along with several other senior leaders.

A senior Congress source told IANS that “Manmohan Singh told party leaders that when the economic recession had hit the global economy, our government (United Progressive Alliance) was able to revive the economy, while the current government’s flawed policies on the economy is the reason for the slowdown.”

The source said that Manmohan Singh emphasised economic slowdown as a great challenge for the current Narendra Modi government.

“Manmohan Singh told the party leaders that unemployment has increased in recent times as many sectors are facing the heat of economic slowdown and gross domestic product (GDP) is continuously falling,” the source said.

He also revealed that the former Prime Minister said Congress leaders need to hit the streets and tell people about the policies of the Congress during 2007-09 when global recession had impacted India and how the then government was able to revive the economy and generate jobs.

The views expressed by Manmohan Singh were supported by Priyanka Gandhi, the source added.

"All-Round Mismanagement" By Modi Govt Led To Slowdown: Manmohan Singh

New Delhi: The state of the economy today is deeply worrying, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said, adding that “all-round mismanagement” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has resulted in the slowdown.

The veteran Congress leader and renowned economist’s comments come two days after government data showed that the Indian economy expanded at its slowest pace in over 6 years in the quarter ended June 30.

Growth in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) stood at 5 percent in the first quarter of the current financial year (2019-20), compared with 5.8 percent in the previous quarter, and 8.0 percent in the quarter ended June 30, 2018.

“India cannot afford to continue down this path. Therefore, I urge the government to put aside vendetta politics, and reach out to all sane voices and thinking minds, to steer our economy out of this man-made crisis,” Dr. Singh said in a video statement.

“The last quarter’s GDP growth rate of 5 percent signals that we are in the midst of a prolonged slowdown,” he said, adding that the country has the potential to grow at a much faster rate.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is widely recognised for the economic reforms which he announced in 1991 when he was the Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government.

Sliding for the fifth quarter in a row, economic expansion came in at the slowest pace since the March 2013 quarter, when it had stood at 4.3 percent. A slowdown in the sale of cars to biscuits and lakhs of estimated job cuts across sectors plagued the economic growth of the country, say analysts.

In its bid to push investments and revive growth, the government has announced a range of measures in the past few days, including easing of FDI or foreign direct investment norms in four sectors, and a reversal of higher taxes on foreign investors as announced in Budget.

Jaipur: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday filed nomination papers as a Congress candidate for the by-poll to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.

86-year-old Singh filed four sets of nomination papers in the chamber of Returning Officer in the Rajasthan Assembly.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Deputy CM Sachin Pilot and several Congress leaders were present on the occasion.

This seat fell vacant in June this year following the demise of BJP Member Madan Lal Saini.

The Congress is confident of the former PM making it to the Upper House of the Parliament from Rajasthan, where it won Assembly polls in last December.

Rajasthan Assembly has 200 seats but currently there are 198 MLAs and two seats are vacant. Congress has 100 MLAs and also enjoys the outside support of 12 out of 13 independents and the legislators of BSP.

The academician-turned politician was a member of the Upper House of Parliament from Assam for almost three decades.

Manmohan Singh was a Rajya Sabha member for five consecutive terms from 1991 to 2019 and the country’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014.
