Baripada: A youth was killed and his mother sustained critical injury after a scooter they were riding on was hit by a speeding bricks-laden truck at Raghunathpur Square on Baripada-Laxmiposi Road in Mayurbhanj district on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Subham Poddar (19) of Poad Astia village.
Subham, who left his home along with his mother Anita Poddar on a Hero Maestro vehicle to attend a function in a neighbouring village, met the accident at around 10.30 AM in the morning. Near Raghunathpur Square, driver of a bricks-laden truck heading to Laxmiposhi from Baripada lost control over the wheels due to rash driving and ended up running over the Scooty.
While Subham died on the spot as his head got crushed under the wheels of the truck, Anita turned critical in the crash. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in a 108 ambulance.
Locals also detained the truck driver along with his vehicle while trying to escape from the spot after the accident.
Tension ran high at the spot following the accident and locals staged a road blockade demanding immediate construction of humps on the road. They alleged road mishap has become a daily affair on the road due to the inordinate delay by PWD officials in accepting their demand for humps.
“We are demanding for humps and rumbler for last 5 to 6 years as this road has become very busy. However, the PWD Department is not paying heed to it. We demand immediate construction of humps to avoid any further mishap like this,” said Raj Shiv Narayan Kisku, Ex-Chairman, Baripada Municipality.
The road blockade was removed after Baripada Town Police reached the spot and had a talk with the blockader. They also seized the truck and arrested the driver.
