World Bicycle Day observed in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Bicycle rallies were held at different places of the state on the occasion of the first official ‘World Bicycle Day’ today.

People from different age group and walks of lives took part in the bicycle rallies that were organised by various groups to create awareness on environment protection, healthy life and benefits of cycling.

Additional DG Satyajit Mohanty flagged-off a cycle expedition at Anand Bhawan in Cuttack. While addressing the gathering, he said, “People should use bicycle to help them lead healthy life and at the same time it will protect the environment.”

The cycle rally, which was organised by Padmashree Yoga Sports Organisation, concluded at Naveen Niwas in Bhubaneswar.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the occasion said, “I wish the cyclists all the very best on their rally. They have come here from Cuttack today.” This apart, Patnaik also felicitated the cyclists.

Speaking about the objective of the cycle rally, Padmashree Mohanty, a participant, said, “This bicycle rally was organised to create awareness on environment. We want to see Odisha as a pollution-free state and therefore, all of us should ensure that pollution level does not increase beyond alarming proportion in the state like New Delhi, which had imposed the odd and even formula to check pollution.”

World Bicycle Day in Odisha

The World Bicycle Day was approved on 12 April 2018 as an official United Nations day of awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure.
