Women’s Hockey World cup 2018: India beat Italy 3-0 to reach quarter-final

London: India beat Italy 3-0 in the cross-over match last night to reach quarterfinals of Women’s Hockey World Cup here.

India will now face Ireland on Thursday for a place in the semi-finals.

For India, Lalremsiami, Neha Goyal and Vandana Katariya scored a goal each to post a convincing win. Lalremsiami scored the opening goal in the ninth minute of the game. With just seconds to go in third quarter, India earned a penalty corner and converted it into a goal with a brilliant deflection from Neha Goyal,while Vandana Katariya scored with a deflection just 5 minutes to go in the final quarter.

Earlier, 10th ranked India had to fight their way into the knockout round after they drew their opening game 1-1 against England before losing to Ireland 0-1 in their second Pool B match of the prestigious tournament.

On the other hand, Italy easily scrapped past China (3-0) and Korea (1-0) before slumping to a heavy 1-12 loss to Netherlands in their last match to finish second in Pool A.

Till date, India have marked a fourth-place finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup at Mandelieu, France, in 1974.
