Nabarangpur: It seems despite all measures by the government to prevent incidents of atrocities on women on charges of being witches, the evil practice still continues unabated in the remote patches of the state.

In the latest incident, a woman in Pateiguda village under Nabarangpur Town Police limits sustained critical injury after her in-laws branded her as a ‘witch’ and thrashed brutally last night.

In her complaint filed with Nabarangpur Town Police yesterday, the victim woman identified as Gomati Majhi of Dangeriguda village has accused her husband Tukaram Majhi, mother-in-law Madana Majhi, father-in-law Hari Majhi and sister-in-law Seema Majhi of meting out inhuman physical as well as mental torture to her for last three years on suspicion of being a ‘witch’. However, their brutality crossed all limits last night when they pulled the victim’s hair and later thrashed her mercilessly with a wooden plank to leave her unconscious.

The victim was rescued by her father who reached the spot after getting an information on the incident and rushed her to a hospital.

“The victim was married to Tukaram Majhi for last 10 years. She has framed allegation of torture against her husband and in-laws. She has been sent to hospital for necessary treatment and the matter is under investigation. Stringent action would be taken against the guilty in the incident,” said Tariq Ahmed Khan, IIC, Nabarangpur Town Police Station.
