Khordha: A woman is fighting for her life at a Bhubaneswar hospital after being doused with kerosene and set on fire by her in laws in Nimina village under Tangi police limits in the district last night.
The incident took place late in the night, moments after a heated exchange of words erupted between the victim identified as Kalyani Swain and her in-laws over some issue. In a fit of rage Kalyani’s mother-in-law sprinkled kerosene all over her body and set her to fire. All the family members including the husband of the victim turned mute spectator as the fire consumed her.
Some neighbours of the family intervened in the matter after hearing the screams and rushed the victim to Tangi CHC. She was later shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar due to deteriorating condition.
“Her in-laws remained quite a fighting bunch ever since Kalyani was married off in the family in 2016. Family discords kept occurring repeatedly in the house in past two years,” said a neighbour of the victim.
Tangi Police have detained the in-laws of the victim reaching the spot and started investigation.
