Woman Set Afire By In-Laws Over Dowry In Salepur

Cuttack: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and in-laws over dowry in Sisua village of Salepur block here on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Gitanjali Behera of Panasapur village under Mahanga Police limits. She had married Babuli Behera of Sisua in 2015. The couple has a 4-year-old daughter.

Gitanjali’s father Gurucharan Sahu filed an FIR on Saturday and alleged that there were regular demands for dowry by his daughter’s husband and in-laws. She was subjected to physical abuse and domestic violence by them on a daily basis.

The parents of Gitanjali have alleged that she was beaten up by her in-laws last night when she expressed her inability to pay any more dowry.

She was first assaulted by her husband and in-laws who later poured kerosene on her and set her afire, the complaint stated.
