Woman cadre Maoist killed in Odisha encounter

RP-Sharma-DGPPhulbani: Boosting the morale of security forces in the Kandhamal district engaged in anti Maoist operations, a woman cadre Maoist was killed in an encounter with Special Opearation Group (SOG) jawans in a forest near Barakhama on Sunday night.

At a press conference in Bhubaneswar today, Odisha DGP RP Sharma said the killed woman Maoist, identified as Banila from Gariabandh area of neigbouring Chhattisgarh, was a member of the Kandhamal-Kalahandi division of CPI (Maoist). The dead Maoist was carrying a cash prize of Rs 4 lakh on her head, he added.

During the encounter, SOG jawans recovered 1 rifle, 32 live bullets and Rs 4,000 from the possession of the dead Maoist.

Dubbing the encounter a big success for police, Sharma informed that it is the first instance in Kandhamal district in which a woman Maoist had been gunned down.

Notably, one SOG jawan also sustained bullet injuries in the encounter and was rushed to the MKCG Medical College in Berhampur. His condition is stated to be out of danger.
