Koraput: A tribal woman in Odisha’s Koraput district on Saturday delivered a baby boy when she was walking at least  3 km to reach  the nearest pucca road and get ambulance to visit  a  government hospital.

Sambari Saunta, wife of Binod Saunta of Mundagadti village under Narayanpatna block in Koraput district, suffered labour pain this morning. Following which, her family members approached local ASHA worker who subsequently called the 102 ambulance service.

However, the ambulance service didn’t turn up due to poor road connectivity to the village.

The aggrieved family had no other choice except to walk at least 3 km to reach a pucca raod and then catch the ambulance to reach hospital.

Sambari delivered a baby boy in the open field while she was still 500 meters away from the pucca road.  After delivering the baby boy, she had to walk in the hilly road again.

Later, both the mother and new born baby were taken to Mathliput Community Health Centre for postnatal care  . Their condition was reportedly stable, when the last reports came in.

It is not an isolated case; a number of such cases have been reported in the tribal dominated Koraput district in the recent past when expectant mother had to be carried in bicycles or cots  or had to travel on foot to reach the nearest health centres as 102 ambulance did not turn up in time citing various reasons.
