Woman immolates herself over inability to pay SHG loan

Balasore: Tension prevailed in Ishani village under Sadar Police Station area in the district on Sunday after a woman died by immolating herself over her inability to repay the Self Help Groups (SHG) loans and her family members claimed she had been murdered by the in-laws.

The deceased has been identified as Mamata Behera, wife of Susant Behera. She doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire.

“Mamata had taken around Rs 46,000 loan through three separate SHG groups of which she was a member. While Mamata repays the loans every month through instalment, today she asked for Rs 1,500 for the purpose and I expressed my inability to give the amount. However, I gave her Rs 1,000 and assured for the rest soon,” said Susant, who runs a shoes store in village market.

“I came to about her death soon after reaching my shop. I suspect she took the extreme step due to her inability to repay the loan for which other members of the SHG were putting pressure on her,” he claimed.

On the other hand, Mamata’s family members claimed she had been murdered by her in-laws who were mentally and physically harassing her.

Police have sent the body for autopsy and started investigation in the incident.
