Athagarh: Tension ran high in Hemamalpur area under Cuttack district after a woman was found hanging at her in-law’s house and her family members alleged it to be a case of dowry killing on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Sarita Jayanti Das, daughter of Suryamani Dash of Badabhuin village.

Sarita’s in-laws called up Athagarh Police Station last night and reported that she had hanged herself to the ceiling of the house. Police reached the spot and rushed the body for postmortem today morning.

However, the deceased woman’s brother Subash Kumar Das lodged a dowry case against her in-laws at the Athagarh Police Station last night. In his complaint he claimed that her sister was getting tortured in the hands of her in-laws to bring more dowry from home and she had been killed for that.

“We had paid a dowry of Rs 50 lakh at the time of marriage and again they were demanding Rs 50 lakh. Sarita had been thrashed brutally by them over the demand last year, following which we brought her back. However, she was allowed to go to her in-laws house again after we reached an agreement with them at a later stage. She has been killed as injury marks were found on her body,” said Subash.

On the other hand, Athagarh SDPO has also admitted that the body was found with several injury marks. However, he maintained that everything would come clear once the police gets the postmortem report.

Meanwhile, police have detained the husband of the deceased in connection to the case and started the probe.
