Cuttack: Tension ran high in Kurang Sasan village under Cuttack Sadar police limits in the district this morning, after a young woman was found dead at her in-laws’ house and her family members alleged it to be a dowry killing.

The deceased woman has been identified as Madhusmita Mallick, daughter of Hrudananda Mallick of Govindram Patna village in the same district.

As per the complaint filed by Madhusmita’s father with Cuttack Sadar Police, since getting married off to Tukuna Mallick of Mallick Sahi of Kurang Sasan village around three years ago, she was being tortured constantly mentally and physically by her husband and a sister-in-law. Tukuna was meting out inhumane treatment to Madhusmita in demand of Rs 50,000 and a bike.

“Tukuna had mercilessly beaten up Madhusmita a few months ago in which she had sustained injuries. Later he had sent the girl to her maternal home. The girl’s father had reached her in-laws’ house last night to drop her and was sleeping in a room when the killing took place. The girl was found dead at her bedroom. We suspect the hand of her husband and sister-in-law in the killing,” said Madhusmita’s uncle.

Police have detained the accused husband and are waiting for the autopsy report to decide their next course of action.
