Nabarangpur: Exposing the sorry state of health sector in Odisha yet again, a pregnant woman turned critical after delivering at her home after an ambulance failed to reach in Nagajodi village under Tohra panchayat in the district yesterday.

The victim woman identified as Bijra Santa (30) developed labour pain in the morning on Thursday and needed immediate shifting to hospital. However, much to the dismay of her family neither the 102 Janani Express nor the 108 NHM ambulance turned up at her home despite their repeated phone calls due to the poor road connectivity to the village.

In absence of the ambulance the victim woman delivered a baby boy at her home later in the day. However, as if it was not the end of the plight for the victim she needed an immediate blood transfusion after the delivery due to excess bleeding. Finding no other option her family carried her on a cot to Kursi PHC from where she was first shifted to Umerkote CHC and then to Nabarangpur DHH.

The family members have claimed that they brought her back to home initially after the DHH staff charged Rs 5,000 for blood transfusion but later got her admitted there with the help of some local ASHA workers.

The woman is out of danger now after the blood transfusion, said the DHH sources.
