Bhubaneswar: With the world celebrating International Women’s day today with an aim to close the gender gap, the Parichay Foundation, a city based NGO has organised an all-woman bike rally here to spread awareness on sexual violence against women as well as to boost their confidence.

The rally called Women Against Sexual Harassment (WASH) started from Sikharchandi hill top and ended at Salia Sahi football ground this morning. A good number of biker women were seen driving down the streets of the capital city to reach the slum area during the rally, which was flagged off by Twin City Police Commissioner YB Khurania.

“A majority of women are facing sexual violence in the society these days and this is our initiative to end this evil. Today a group of confident women from posh area would travel to a slum where nobody wants to venture. This is small step towards a big goal,” said Rojalin Patsani Mishra ahead of the rally.

“Biking is no longer a man’s domain and it is also not a thing that only the affluent class can afford. Everybody can do bike riding these days. A woman today is capable of doing a lot of things independently. Our rally aims at creating that feeling of confidence in women,” said a woman biker who took part in the rally.

A cultural programme was also held to mark the International Women’s Day on this occasion.

Among others, social activists Subhashree Das and Usasi Mishra also remained present during the event.
