Woman arrested with 20 grams brown sugar

Bhubaneswar: The Quick Action Team (QAT) and Mancheswar police have arrested one 25-year-old woman for brown sugar peddling, police said today. Police have seized brown sugar weighing 20 grams from the accused woman identified as Purnima Jena.

Police said that the accused was nabbed during a raid in a slum in Mancheswar area. As per official statistics, police have managed to seize only 8.7 grams of brown sugar in Bhubaneswar between 2011 and 2015.

However, the seizure went around one kilogram between 2016 and 2017 in the state capital. Similarly, police have seized 833 grams of brown sugar from Bhubaneswar in 2018.

Police said that the root of the peddling racket originates from Balasore and adjoining areas. “The banned contraband is mostly smuggled into Odisha from states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. The small time traders in the slum procure it from Balasore and its adjoining areas and sell it in Bhubaneswar and neighbouring areas with hefty margins,” police said.
