Wild elephant herd wreaks havoc in Bargarh village

Bargarh: With no respite in sight from jumbo incursion in the State, a herd of wild elephants sneaked into Diptipur area under Padampur Sub-Division in Bargarh district and wreaked havoc on Saturday.

As per the report, the herd comprising of pachyderms of different age groups were spotted in Ghanamal forest in the wee hours around 4 am by some villagers who called up forest department officials.

A 10-member forest team led by Forester Purna Chandra Dora and comprising of Forest Guard Diptibala Tandi, rushed to the spot and tried to drive away the herd later.

While the jumbos caused crop damage in the area no reports of destruction of houses has been reported so far.

Notably, incidents of elephant incursion are on a rise in Padampur area with at least two locals trampled to death by jumbos in the past few days.

Locals have blamed forest officials’ negligence for the menace.
