Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State pollution Control Board (OSPCB) on Wednesday expressed its serious concern over the quality of water in 11 river systems in the state.

The OSPCB has informed the Housing and Urban Development Department of the state government that water in 11 river systems – Mahanadi, Baitarani, Brahmani, Rushikulya, Nagavali, Subarnarekha, Kolab, Budhabalanga, Vamsadhara, Indravati and Bahuda is observed to be downgraded from its Standard Quality.

Discharging of domestic used water without any treatment is the cause of the sharp fall of the quality of water in the river body.

Four critical parameters such as pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Coliform (IC) are taken into consideration in respect to water quality data.

The Housing and Urban Development Department, on the other hand, has written to the Commissioners of Bhubaneswar Municipality Corporation (BMC), Berhampur Municipality Corporation (BeMC), Cuttack Municipality Corporation (CMC), Rourkela Municipality Corporation (RMC) and Sambalpur Municipality Corporation (SMC) have been informed about the matter.

The Executive Officer of all Municipalities and Notified Area Councils (NACs) also have been informed about the downgradation of the river water in the state.

All the Commissioners of the Municipality Corporations and Executive Officer of Municipalities and Notified Area Councils (NACs) have been directed to take proactive steps for appropriate treatment of domestic used water prior to discharging of the same into nearby water bodies to improve overall water quality of the concerned rivers.
