Bhubaneswar: The voting for the nomination of Speaker for Vidhan Sabha will be held after the session begins at 11 am on Saturday. On his fifth term, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has suggested the name of Digapahandi MLA Surjya Narayana Patro.

As per rules, first, a proposal for nomination for speaker must be made which will be followed by a suggestion of candidates by elected parties. This is scheduled to occur at about 12 pm.

Biju Janta Dal (BJD) supremo and on his fifth term CM Naveen Patnaik had suggested the name of Digapahandi MLA Surjya Narayana Patro for the post of Speaker on Friday.

But apart from the ruling party, no other party has made nominations for the position of Speaker.

While Patro seems to be favourite candidate, he might get competition from other senior leaders of Opposition who have gotten elected to the Vidhan Sabha.

BJP’s Jayanarayan Mishra and Pradipta Nayak, Congress’ Narasingha Mishra, Tara Prasad Bahinipati and six-time Suresh Kumar Routray are not only experienced but also seasoned politicians. Any of them could be possibly Patro’s contender.

Also up for grabs is Ruling party’s Deputy Chief Whip.
